Emerging technologies for the production of biojet fuels from wood—can greenhouse gas emission reductions meet policy requirements?

چکیده
Abstract The transition from fossil jet fuel to biojet is an important step towards reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions aviation. To enable such a shift, the Swedish Government introduced GHG emission reduction mandate of 27% by 2030 for aviation sold in Sweden, forcing suppliers blend fuel. A similar policy instrument being discussed within EU. Biojet fuels with life cycle 90% lower than those are projected be available 2025, which far exceeds requirement 65% EU Renewable Energy Directive. purpose this study was carry out assessments number wood-fuel-based production chains near commercialization and determine whether they meet projection requirement. illustrates what can achieved region high availability wood access heat power low emissions. studied include hydrocarbon intermediates via (i) fast pyrolysis, (ii) hydrothermal liquefaction, (iii) thermal gasification followed Fischer–Tropsch-synthesis, (iv) cellulosic ethanol fermentation upgrading these four other liquid biofuels. results show that all deliver 89–91% fuels. Non-fossil hydrogen required achieve pyrolysis liquefaction.

Microalgal biomass production offers a number of advantages over conventional biomass production including, higher productivities, use of otherwise non productive land, reuse and recovery of waste nutrients, use of saline or brackish waters, and reuse of CO2 from power-plant flue-gas or similar sources. Microalgal biomass production and utilization offers potential for greenhouse gas (GHG) avo...
